Egyptian strawberries and Hepatitis A

Posted on : November 18, 2016, By:  Lisa Capote

Federal officials reported an ongoing investigation into a Hepatitis A outbreak linked to frozen Egyptian strawberries served in smoothies.  There 134 people were reportedly ill. 70% of the individuals reportedly ill have required hospitalization. Almost all individuals interviewed reported drinking smoothies containing strawberries.

Food and Drug Administration investigators have been using the working theory that the Hepatitis A came from frozen strawberries from Egypt.  However, Egypt’s ministry of Climate Change and Environment said that frozen strawberries originating from the country are, based on sampling, Hepatitis-free.  The FDA is working to identify other parts of the supply chain and it will take appropriate action.
